성탄절이면 빠지지 않는 대표적인 캐롤 'O Holy Night'는 어언 160세라는 나이에 이른다. 유명한 로맨틱 발레 '지젤'(Giselle)을 쓴 프랑스 작곡가 아돌프 아당 (Adolphe Adam 1803 ~1856)이 1847년 포도주 상인 Placide Cappeau가 끄적거린 노랫말에 곡을 붙였고 8년후 영어로 번안되었다. 예수 탄생을 경배하고 찬양하는 경건하고 아름다운 이 노래는, 교회 밖에서도 온갖 음악장르를 타고 널리 불리고 사랑 받았다. 라디오전파를 탄 최초의 음악이라는 이 노래의 인기버전의 하나가 팝의 디바 머라이어 캐리(1970~ New York) - 그녀는 감칠맛 나는 독특한 창법의 열창을 세번(1994, 1996, 2000)의 앨범에 자랑스레 담았다.
