독일 종교음악의 개척자인 하인리히 쉬츠가 기초를 닦은 칸타타 형식을 가져와서 그 속에 가장 종교적이고 가장 아름다운 칸타타의 꽃을 피운 바흐는 일생동안 약 300곡의 칸타타를 썼다. 마틴 루터의 종교개혁 이후 교회에서 중요하게 취급해 오던 코랄의 정신을 칸타타의 기본형식으로 삼으면서 설교음악으로서의 칸타타의 기능을 완벽하게 발휘시키고 있을뿐 아니라 합창 이외에도 레치타티보, 아리아, 중창, 오르간과 관현악을 유기적으로 배합함으로써 종교음악의 위대한 금자탑을 쌓았다.
1725년 3월 25일, 라이프찌히에서 초연된 이 작품은 4성부 합창과 소프라노, 테너, 베이스의 독창으로 연주되고 모두 6곡으로 구성되어 있다. 요셉에게 천사들이 나타나서 마리아가 메시아를 잉태하게 될 것이라는 통고를 하는 것을 기념하는 '성 수태고지제'를 위해서 쓴 작품이다.
